Playing a crucial role in London's flood defenses, the Thames Barrier is an impressive piece of engineering. Officially opened in 1984, it was many years in the planning and construction. In 1953, over 300 people died following flooding in the Thames Estuary, highlighting the potential for catastrophe should flooding occur further up the Thames in central London. Plans to improve the flood defenses throughout London were drawn up, and it was decided that a new barrier should be built at Woolwich Reach to protect the city.
Operated by the Environment Agency, the barrier is the second largest moveable flood barrier in the world. It is designed to allow river traffic to pass whilst being able to move quickly into position should the weather and tidal conditions require it.
