Greenland Pier
Greenland Dock Pier is now the launching point for a river taxi service along the Thames in both directions. In past times, though, Greenland Dock played an important part in London's whaling and timber trades, and is so named because many of the whaling ships carried out their work in the waters around Greenland. Built in 1698, it is London's oldest riverside dock. It is still a working dock, although now only used for recreational purposes.
Further along the river towards Deptford are Drake's Steps. Here, Sir Francis Drake was knighted by Queen Elizabeth onboard his ship, the Golden Hinde, following his circumnavigation of the globe.
